A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER
- Do not over-dress. Avoid being sweaty and clammy.
- Wear a long-sleeved top inside of woolen and knitted sweaters. Wear warm leggings inside jeans or dress pants.
- A thick coat that falls below the waist helps to trap body heat within the layers and consequently keeps the warmth within.
- Be warm-not hot, and dry at all times. Avoid cotton as it does not provide the necessary warmth, try polyester or synthetics.
- Corduroys are the warmest pants you can wear in the winter. Wear thick leggings underneath a pair of corduroys to keep yourself warm.
- Gloves that you wear should be properly insulated.
- In an emergency, you can further insulate your jacket, shirt by stuffing newspaper, dry leaves or the like in your clothes.
- When dressing, keep in mind whether you will be exposed to moisture. Both moisture and wind can make you colder faster than if the weather is dry and calm.
- Wear thick socks, made preferably of wool, help keep your feet extremely warm. Since the feet and head are main areas from which heat escapes, warm feet ensure your entire body more warmth.
- Wear long, warm boots with warm linings inside and strong, rubber bases that prevent you from slipping on ice, and should be water- and wind-proof. A layer of fur inside the boots can also provide comfort, and look stylish outside as well.
- If it is bitterly cold, dress to keep warm regardless of how you look, even if you look like a geek.
